Luke 12:35-40 – The Watchful Servants (August 9, 2026)
In the late 1800s a reporter from the New York Journal tried to get A.B. Simpson (founder of The Alliance) to name the date of Jesus’ return. He asked Simpson, “Do you know when the Lord is coming back?” Simpson replied, “Yes, I do. And I’ll tell you — if you promise to print exactly what I say, references and all.” The reporter agreed and got his notebook ready. Simpson said, “Put this down: ‘This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto the nations, and then shall the end come.’ Matthew 24:14.” He paused and asked the reporter, “Have you written the reference?” “Yes,” the reporter said. “What else?” Simpson answered, “Nothing more.” He refused to give a date. Instead he pointed to the work the Master left His servants to do until He returns.
How you’d preach it
Excellent historical anecdote from Alliance history that redirects speculation about dates toward faithful mission and readiness.
