Analogy

The Tyranny of What-If

common pastoral observation

Anxiety often lives in the future tense. It rehearses a dozen versions of what might go wrong and treats each one as probable. The present moment—the only place where we can actually act or trust—gets crowded out. One way to describe the battle is simply learning to stay where our feet are instead of living three conversations ahead in a conversation that has not happened yet.

How you’d preach it

Relatable for any congregation that knows the loop of anxious forecasting. Pair with Jesus’ teaching on worry in Matthew 6.
