Bluey, VeggieTales, and Adventures in Odyssey

Salt & Pepper – Everyday Seasoning (Matthew 5:13)

When I was a kid my family did road trips back and forth from Ontario to Saskatchewan just about every year. It was close to 24 hours of driving with no iPads, iPhones, game systems, or DVD players — just the open road and the side window we were forced to look out of when we got in trouble. My favourite part of those family road trips was being able to listen to *Adventures in Odyssey*. We listened so much that we’d be able to sing or hum the songs in sync and quote the lines from every episode. It was as if the show soaked into us and changed how we talked and thought. Around the same time we also had *VeggieTales*. I’m sure many of you would be able to sing the theme song. More recently there’s been a show that seems to have an interesting effect on kids: *Bluey*. There have been wild news reports since it came out in 2019. Parents noticed their kids saying things like “rubbish” or “brekky.” Some kids who watched a significant amount even gained a bit of an Australian accent. Just like how Bluey, VeggieTales, or Adventures in Odyssey can saturate a kid’s world and cause them to think, act, and talk differently, God calls his followers to do the same — to saturate the world around us with his presence and influence, like salt.

How you’d preach it

Warm cultural illustration of how repeated exposure shapes speech, thinking, and identity. Connects naturally to the call to be salt that seasons everything it touches.
