In the eleventh century King Henry III of Bavaria grew weary of court life and the pressures of rule. He applied to a local monastery, asking to spend the rest of his life as a contemplative. Prior Richard asked if he understood that the vow included obedience—something difficult for a man used to giving orders. Henry insisted he was ready. The prior replied, “Then go back to your throne and serve faithfully in the place where God has put you.” When Henry died, it was said of him that he learned to rule by being obedient. The story still confronts the temptation to escape ordinary responsibility in search of something that feels more spiritual.
How you’d preach it
Strong for people who feel their ordinary role is second-class. Faithfulness where God has placed you is the calling.
