Abraham Lincoln, under constant fire during the Civil War, resolved that he would not compromise his integrity. He once said he desired to conduct the affairs of his administration so that if, at the end, he had lost every other friend on earth, he would at least have one friend left—“and that friend shall be down inside of me.” The standard is internal. Public reputation can be managed. The conversation a person has with himself when the lights are off is harder to fake.
