John Mark Comer emphasizes that spiritual formation is not primarily about trying harder to be a good Christian. It is about “apprenticeship to Jesus” — learning to abide in Him the way a branch abides in the vine. The goal is not behavior modification through willpower, but transformation through presence and practice. We become like the one we spend time with. Comer repeatedly returns to the idea that “the way of Jesus is a way of life, not a set of religious activities added on top of an otherwise unchanged life.”
