Is God a Moral Monster? – Paul Copan
Paul Copan addresses the charge that the God of the Old Testament is a moral monster. One of his key points is that many of the difficult laws are descriptive of a broken world rather than the ideal God ultimately desires. God works within existing ancient Near Eastern social structures while gradually pushing His people toward greater justice, dignity, and mercy. Copan also stresses that God’s “jealousy” is not petty insecurity but the protective love of a covenant husband whose people repeatedly run after other gods. The cross ultimately reveals that God’s justice and mercy meet in the self-giving of Christ.
