Cornelius Plantinga, Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be
Plantinga writes, “To covet is to want somebody else’s good so strongly that one is tempted to steal it. To envy is to resent somebody else’s good so much that one is tempted to spoil it.” The distinction is precise. Both are forms of disordered desire. One grabs; the other would rather see the other person lose than see them keep what they have.
