Research comparison of Japanese and American mothers (1986)
In 1986 researchers asked mothers in Japan and in Minneapolis what a child most needs to succeed academically. The American mothers ranked ability highest. The Japanese mothers ranked effort highest. The difference is more than cultural curiosity. One view treats success as largely fixed. The other treats it as something that can still be chosen and practiced.
