Disciplines as Means, Not Ends

Celebration of Discipline – Richard Foster

Richard Foster’s central insight in *Celebration of Discipline* is that the spiritual disciplines (meditation, prayer, fasting, study, simplicity, solitude, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance, celebration) are not ways to earn God’s favor. They are means of grace — pathways that place us before God so that He can transform us. The disciplines do not change us by our effort; they put us in a place where God can work. They are the opposite of willpower religion.
