The Unfinished Scale

A composer’s rebellious son would come home late, go to the piano, and loudly play a scale—stopping just before the final note. He would then go to bed, leaving the unresolved sound in the air. The father, unable to rest, would eventually get up and strike the missing note. Only then could he sleep. Some tensions in the soul work the same way. Until the thing is resolved, the mind and heart stay restless.
