Henry Martyn was a brilliant Cambridge mathematician, honored at age twenty for achievements in his field. Yet he later said that in those accomplishments he had “only grasped a shadow.” He sailed to India as a missionary at twenty-four and prayed, “Lord, let me burn out for You.” In the seven years before his death he translated the New Testament into three difficult Eastern languages. The earlier success had been real. It had not been enough. Fulfillment came when his gifts were poured out for something larger than his own advancement.

Achievement without deeper purpose still leaves an ache. Fulfillment is found in being spent for something that outlasts us.
