Gold Coins for a Beggar
Traditional anecdote about Alexander the Great
A beggar asked alms of Alexander the Great. The emperor threw him several gold coins. A courtier objected that copper would have met the man’s need. Alexander replied, “Copper coins would suit the beggar’s need, but gold coins suit Alexander’s giving.” The measure of the gift was not only what the beggar required. It was what the king was like. Christian generosity is shaped by the same logic: we give according to the character of the One who has given to us.
