The Older Brother’s Problem
Jesus’ parable / classic application
In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger brother’s sin is obvious — he wastes everything and ends up in a pigsty. The older brother’s sin is subtler and more dangerous. He stays home, works hard, keeps the rules… and still ends up outside the feast, angry that the father is generous to the wrong kind of person. Many in the church are older-brother types. We have never run off into obvious rebellion, yet we still do not know the joy of the father’s house because we have been relating to God as a boss to be pleased rather than a father to be enjoyed.
How you’d preach it
Essential for congregations that are strong on morality but weak on grace and joy.
