biblical distinction between happiness and joy
Biblical joy is not the same as the pleasant mood we call happiness. It can coexist with tears and hardship because its root is not in changing circumstances but in a settled confidence about God and the future He has secured. Happiness rises and falls. Joy can remain when the surface is rough.

Joy in Scripture is often present in suffering. It is not the same as pleasant feelings.
