The Other Man Left His Valuables Too
H.A. Ironside (Bishop Potter anecdote)
Bishop Potter, boarding a ship, requested that his valuables be locked in the ship’s safe. He explained he was uneasy about the appearance of the man sharing his cabin. The purser agreed and added, “It’s all right, bishop. The other man has been up here and left his for the same reason.” The story is almost too neat, which is why it sticks. We are often most suspicious of the faults we most fear being seen in ourselves.
