The Hearing Aids Gift

Keller describes an aging man whose hearing is failing, though he blames everyone else for mumbling. Finally he gets tested and is told he needs hearing aids. When he sees the cost he protests that they cannot afford it. His wife says, “Buy the best ones and consider it a gift from me.” The man realizes that to accept the gift is to admit weakness — to acknowledge, “I am an aging man who can no longer hear.” Some gifts can only be received by admitting need. The gospel is the ultimate such gift.
