Keller describes prayer as having two wings: upward (adoration and praise) and inward/outward (confession, petition, and intercession). Both are necessary. Prayer that is only petition becomes self-centered. Prayer that is only adoration can become detached from the real struggles of life. Biblical prayer holds both awe before God and honest engagement with our needs and the needs of the world. The gospel fuels both wings: we praise God for who He is and what He has done, and we come boldly with our requests because of what Christ has accomplished.
