The Uncomfortable Bed (Keller)

Keller retells an old fairy tale: a wicked witch offers travelers a wonderfully soft bed. Anyone who sleeps through the night in it turns to stone at sunrise and becomes part of her collection. A servant girl, filled with pity, secretly fills the bed of one traveler with sticks, stones, and thistles. He spends a miserable night, curses her, and leaves. Under her breath she says, “The misery you know now is nothing like the infinitely greater misery a comfortable sleep would have brought upon you. Those were my sticks and stones of love.” Keller applies it: God often puts “sticks and stones of love” in our beds to keep us from the far greater danger of spiritual sleep.
