In the 1928 Olympics, Australian sculler Henry Pearce was leading his race when a duck and her ducklings appeared on a collision course. Rather than cut through them, he pulled in his oars and waited. The delay cost him time; he still won the race. The moment is remembered less for the gold than for the decision to protect what was weaker and in the way.
