Somerset Maugham’s mother was an extraordinarily beautiful woman married to a man widely considered ugly. When a friend asked how she could have married him, she replied, “He has never once hurt my feelings.” The answer relocates the measure of a person. Outward form fades. The cumulative weight of never wounding the one closest to you does not.
