Ten Minutes of Laughter

Norman Cousins, Anatomy of an Illness

Norman Cousins, diagnosed with a rare and painful disease, checked himself out of the hospital and prescribed his own treatment: Marx Brothers films and old comedy. He discovered that ten minutes of genuine laughter gave him two hours of pain-free sleep. The account was later published and drew thousands of responses from physicians. Laughter is not a cure-all, but it is far from irrelevant to human flourishing.
