Early in his presidency, Calvin Coolidge awoke in a hotel room to find a cat burglar going through his pockets. Coolidge asked him not to take a watch chain with an engraved charm, then learned the young man was a college student with no money for his bill or ticket home. Coolidge counted out $32 as a loan, advised him to leave quietly to avoid the Secret Service, and later received repayment. Mercy here was not naivety. It was the decision to meet a wrong with a path back.
