The Mother’s Request
Traditional Napoleon anecdote
A mother approached Napoleon seeking a pardon for her son. The emperor said the young man had committed the offense twice and justice demanded the sentence. “I do not ask for justice,” she replied, “I plead for mercy.” When Napoleon answered that her son did not deserve mercy, she said, “Sir, if he deserved it, it would not be mercy.” The distinction still holds. Mercy is never earned. That is what makes it mercy.
