On the first day of kindergarten the teachers did their best with an unusual name tag: Fruit Stand. They invited him to play with blocks and offered him a snack. At dismissal they asked if he knew which bus was his. He did not answer. When they turned the name tag over, the reverse side read simply “Anthony.” The bus stop had been written where the name should have been. The story is almost too neat, which is why it stays. We can spend a long time calling someone by the wrong name.
