Stick and Slip

Squeaky chalk on a blackboard is caused by “stick and slip.” The chalk sticks, then suddenly slips and vibrates, producing the sound, then sticks again. The cycle repeats. Some relational friction works the same way—small resistances that build, release in a jarring way, and then rebuild. Naming the pattern is sometimes the first step toward changing how we hold the chalk.
How you’d preach it
Even ordinary irritation has a mechanism. Useful as a light image for friction in relationships or communication.
