Oil Lamp Trimming
Luke 12:35-40 – The Watchful Servants
Keeping an oil lamp burning through the night required regular attention. You had to trim the wick — cutting away the old burned ends even while it was still lit — so the flame would continue to burn brightly instead of smoking or going out. You also had to add oil so it would not run dry. An oil lamp does not stay lit by accident. In the same way, our spiritual life does not stay alive or flourish by accident. We need the ongoing presence and work of the Holy Spirit. The oil is not something we can produce ourselves; it is the life of God given to us. Our call is to remain in Him, to stay close, and to bring our lives under His care. Sometimes the trimming (pruning) is painful, but it is not punishment. It is how the Father keeps us ready and burning brightly in a dark world.
