The Loose Cable

A missionary was given a car that would not start without a push. For two years he arranged for children to push it, parked on hills, or left the engine running. When a new missionary arrived, he looked under the hood, tightened a loose cable, and the engine started immediately. The power had been there the whole time. Only the connection was missing. J.B. Phillips’s paraphrase of Ephesians speaks of “how tremendous is the power available to us who believe.” The question is often not whether the power exists, but whether the connection is firm.
How you’d preach it
The power was present all along. The connection was not. Useful for spiritual life that feels powerless.
