Not to Get Out, but to Do His Will

Our Daily Bread, December 29, 1993 (Ivan in prison camp)

In a Soviet prison camp, Ivan was praying with eyes closed when another prisoner mocked him: “Prayers won’t help you get out of here any faster.” Ivan answered, “I do not pray to get out of prison but to do the will of God.” The reply relocates the center of prayer. Deliverance is a right request. So is the request to be faithful where deliverance has not yet come.

How you’d preach it

Prayer is not only petition for escape. It is alignment with God’s purposes in the place we are.
