The Handshake That Cost the Masters

On the final hole of the 1961 Masters, Arnold Palmer had a one-stroke lead and a good tee shot. A friend in the gallery shook his hand and congratulated him. Palmer later said that the moment he took the hand he knew he had lost his focus. He found sand, missed the green, missed the putt, and lost the tournament. “You don’t forget a mistake like that; you just learn from it.” Pride and premature certainty have cost more than golf tournaments.
