Samuel Grabbed the Surgeon’s Finger
Randy Alcorn, Why Pro-Life? (recounting Michael Clancy photo of Samuel Armas, 1999)
In 1999 an unborn child named Samuel Armas was operated on for spina bifida. As the surgeon closed the incision, the baby pushed his hand out of the womb and grabbed the surgeon’s finger. Photojournalist Michael Clancy caught the moment. He later said that in that instant he went from pro-choice to pro-life: “I was totally in shock… I know abortion is wrong now—it’s absolutely wrong.” Samuel was sewn back into his mother’s womb and delivered nearly four months later. One tiny hand, reaching, changed a man’s entire framework.
