Pioneer 10 / Time magazine account
Pioneer 10 was launched in 1972 to reach Jupiter. It did that—and then kept going. Past Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. By 1997 it was more than six billion miles from the sun, still beaming signals from an 8-watt transmitter, about as powerful as a bedroom night light. The primary mission had been completed decades earlier. The probe simply did not stop. Some callings work the same way: the original task is done, and the faithfulness continues.
