He Opened the Cage

A.J. Gordon met a boy with a cage of wild birds he had trapped. The boy planned to play with them and then feed them to a cat. Gordon bought the birds for two dollars despite the boy’s protest that they could not sing well. He took the cage behind the church, opened the door, and let them fly. The next Sunday he used the empty cage to illustrate Christ’s redeeming work: purchased at a cost, then released. The birds were not improved and returned. They were set free.
