In *The Screwtape Letters*, C.S. Lewis writes from the perspective of a senior demon advising his nephew on how to tempt a young man. One of the recurring themes is the power the enemy gains when a Christian becomes isolated. Whether the isolation is intentional or gradual, when we are not consistently among other believers we begin to drift. Resentment, self-centredness, and spiritual withering can grow without us even noticing. Satan wants us to believe we can do the Christian life alone — that we can grow by ourselves at home, teach ourselves, and need no one else. Scripture and experience both say otherwise. Discipleship in community is one of God’s primary means of keeping us from self-deception.
