Stanford Prison Experiment
June 8 – Micah 3 – Listen Up Leaders
I watched a Netflix documentary based on a true story called the Stanford Prison Experiment. The experiment took about 24 individuals at random and assigned them to two roles: fake guards or fake prisoners. The guards were told simply not to physically abuse anyone. The experiment was supposed to last about two weeks. It was shut down after six days because of how bad the guards became. Over those six days the guards grew increasingly worse in their behaviour toward the prisoners — humiliating them and traumatizing them. They ignored the rules they had been given and tried to see how far they could push the power and authority they had been given. They didn’t care about the prisoners (who weren’t even real prisoners). They just wanted more for themselves.
How you’d preach it
Clear illustration of how ordinary people, given unaccountable power, can quickly become abusive. Pairs well with Micah’s indictment of leaders who “hate good and love evil” and use their position for personal gain.
