Taylor Swift Parasocial Relationships

There is a phenomenon called “parasocial relationships.” It happens a lot with celebrities and social media figures. Fans of Taylor Swift, for example, read all the news, listen carefully to the lyrics, follow every social media post, watch documentaries, and begin to feel as if they *know* her — as if they are close friends — even though they have never actually interacted with her. They know a great deal *about* her, but they do not truly know her. Something similar can happen with Jesus. We can accumulate a lot of information about Him through books, sermons, podcasts, and social media and still remain at a distance. Knowing about Jesus is not the same as knowing Jesus. Intentional discipleship moves us from information to intimacy.
