Alexander Maclaren observed that disobedience is the root of unbelief, and unbelief is the mother of further disobedience. Faith is voluntary submission. If faith is not exercised, the true cause often lies deeper than intellectual reasons—in the moral aversion of the will and the pride that asks, “Who is Lord over us?” The less one trusts, the more one disobeys; the more one disobeys, the less one trusts.
