Douglas MacArthur, Reminiscences (West Point)
At West Point, Douglas MacArthur was called on to recite a complex section on the time-space relationship later associated with Einstein. He had memorized the text but did not understand it. When the instructor asked if he understood the theory, MacArthur said, “No, sir.” After a silence the professor replied, “Neither do I, Mr. MacArthur. Section dismissed.” The moment is memorable for the shared honesty. Not every hard thing yields to us on demand. Admitting the limit is sometimes the most truthful response.
