On What Do You Build Your Values?

John Gardner spoke on the need to restore values to the culture. A student asked, “On what do you build your values?” Gardner paused, looked down, and said, “I do not know.” Charles Colson notes that when he has contended before academic audiences that a secular, relativistic society has no adequate basis for ethics, he has rarely been challenged—and in private is often agreed with. The question remains necessary: values without a foundation eventually float free of any binding force.
