On a blood-bank poster that read “Be a volunteer Blood Donor,” someone had printed, “That’s the best kind.” The addition is almost too simple. Willingness expressed is not the same as willingness enacted. The best kind of volunteer is the one whose name appears on the schedule and whose presence appears in the room.
