The canyon was a trickle first
Original analogy from the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon was not dug in a weekend of drama. A river, patient and ordinary, cut stone by returning to the same path. Character works the same way, in both directions. A life of integrity is almost never one heroic hour. It is a thousand unremarkable yeses. A life of ruin is often a thousand unremarkable permissions. The spectacle at the end makes us think the change was sudden. The river knows better.
How you’d preach it
Use for sanctification, habit, or the deceit of “just this once.” Invite people to name the small channel they keep cutting — toward prayer, or toward a secret. The canyon is already being made.
