They did not know him on the road
Luke 24:13–35
Two disciples leave Jerusalem with their hope in pieces. A stranger joins them, hears the whole collapse, and opens the Scriptures. Their hearts burn, and they still do not know him — not until a table, a loaf, a familiar breaking. Recognition comes at the ordinary place, after the long walk of disappointment. Luke is careful: Jesus was with them in the confusion, not only after the unveiling. Easter is not only an empty tomb. It is a companion who will walk the seven miles of a ruined afternoon.
How you’d preach it
Land this on people who expected God to look like victory and met him looking like a stranger. The sermon should not rush the bread. Stay on the road long enough for the room to admit they have been walking it.
