Object lesson
The cup he asked to pass
Matthew 26:36–46; Luke 22:39–46
In the garden Jesus does not perform serenity. He asks if the cup can pass, then drinks it. The object is ordinary tableware charged with wrath, obedience, and love at once. The disciples sleep. The friends fail. The will of the Father is not a mood Jesus manufactures. It is a cup he takes with his eyes open. Gethsemane is the end of any gospel that cannot sweat.
How you’d preach it
Hold a cup. Distinguish Gethsemane from stoicism. He is not calm. He is obedient. That is better news for a frightened room.
