The friends who would not sit still
Job 2:11–13; Job 42:7
Job’s friends do their best work in the first seven days, when they sit on the ground and say nothing. Then they open their mouths to defend God and injure the man. They have a tidy universe: suffering must be a receipt. Job will not sign it. God will later say the friends have not spoken what is right. Some pastoral harm is just theology that cannot bear a mystery.
How you’d preach it
Teach the silence first. Then warn against sermons that explain a wound the text has not explained. Presence is sometimes the only orthodox sentence.
