The prophet who loved a plant
Jonah 4
Jonah is angry enough to die, not because Nineveh was spared, but because a plant that shaded him withered. God asks if Jonah does well to be angry, and then asks about a city full of people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many cattle. The book ends on that question. A prophet can preach repentance and still love his comfort more than a city’s life.
How you’d preach it
Use when the congregation wants mercy for us and fire for them. Jonah is not a children’s fish tale here. He is a mirror.
