Bread that spoils by morning
Exodus 16; echoed in Matthew 6:11, 25–34
In the wilderness Israel is told to gather only today’s manna. What they hoard overnight breeds worms. The miracle is not only that bread appears. It is that tomorrow’s bread is forbidden as a way of life. Anxiety is often just manna kept past sundown: we try to secure a day God has not yet given, and the thing we clutched becomes the thing that spoils us. Jesus will later point to daily bread and to birds that do not barn their grain. The object lesson is old. So is the refusal to learn it.
How you’d preach it
Hold a loaf, or a single day’s portion. Ask what they are trying to gather for a Tuesday God has not handed them yet — a conversation, a bank number, a child’s future. The text is not against planning. It is against hoarding the day that is not yours.
