The better portion

Luke 10:38–42

Martha is doing the necessary work of a house with a guest. Mary sits. Jesus will not let Martha’s anxiety become the law of the room, and he will not mock the work. He names the one thing needful. The portion Mary chose will not be taken from her. Some churches are full of Marthas who are right about the dishes and wrong about the hour. Presence is not laziness. It is the first hospitality.

How you’d preach it

Honor Martha before you correct her. Then ask what the congregation is so busy serving that they will not sit.
