Story
The ewe lamb that unmasked a king
2 Samuel 12:1–7
Nathan does not begin with David’s name. He tells a story about a rich man and a poor man’s one ewe lamb, and David burns with the right anger at the wrong person. “You are the man.” The parable gets past the guard that a lecture would have met. Conviction sometimes needs a story the hearer can judge before he realizes he is in it.
How you’d preach it
Use when the text must confront the powerful, or when the room is skilled at applying sermons to other people. Let the story do the work before you name them.
