Thirty pieces and a field
Matthew 26:14–16; 27:3–10
Judas sells him for the price of a slave and tries to give the silver back when the night will not sit still. The priests will not put blood money in the treasury. They buy a field for burying strangers. The coins will not become clean by changing hands. Betrayal often looks like a reasonable transaction until the field has a name. Matthew will not let us make Judas only a villain from a play. He is what calculating love becomes.
How you’d preach it
Do not use Judas to make the room feel safe. Ask what we have already priced. The field is what our bargains purchase.
