A. W. Tozer wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” He was not flattering intellectuals. He was saying that worship follows vision: a small, irritable, easily-managed God produces a small, irritable, easily-managed people. The sentence is a diagnostic. Before you ask what a church should do, ask what God they have actually been looking at.
How you’d preach it
Open a sermon on the character of God here. Then test the congregation’s working picture: is he mainly a mascot, a cop, a therapist, or the Holy One? The text will have to correct the picture.
